4th AND 5TH GRADES CREATE A "FRANCISCAN INTERNET"...

Right now in 4th and 5th grade, we have created a "Franciscan Internet" out in the hallway.  Each student was given a paper cell phone and asked to draw a picture of either their favorite character, or their favorite scene in the books they are are reading together in class  The students had to write a caption for the picture, as if they were posting this
picture on "Instagram"--a popular photo sharing website that links up to Facebook.

In both grades, we discussed bullying, internet bullying, and putting each other down.  We talked about how everything they put on the internet will always come back to them, and we also talked about how easy it is to be mean on the internet when you are not face-to-face with the other person, and how even if you post something as someone else, the truth will always come out.

We spoke about St. Francis and how he always tried to maintain friendships by uplifting and supporting those around him, and we encouraged the students to do the same. There are also several bible verses out in the hall for the students to be mindful of while using social media.

Since most students in 4th and 5th grade have had very little exposure to social media, this lesson provides them with practice leaving messages and "liking" their peers' work. The phones are displayed out in the hall for everyone to see--just like on the real internet. The students are not allowed to talk about their comments to each other, instead they have to actually go and read them.  Overall, the students are off to a great start and are very excited about this on-going project!

Not only is this lesson fun, but it teaches the students responsibility, self-awareness, and proper etiquette for social media.  Since the students are reading, writing, and demonstrating their comprehension of what they have been reading--this lesson touches on MANY Common Core standards for ELA and ties together reading for comprehension, current events, civics, writing, reading for understanding, and religion.

The ELA standards covered are:
Reading Standards for Literature:
3.  Describe in depth, a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., a character's thoughts, words, or actions).
Reading Standards for Writing:
3.  Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.
9.  Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.
a.  Apply grade 4 reading standards to literature (e.g., describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific detail in the text. [e.g., a character's thoughts, words, or actions.].").
Reading Standards for Speaking and Listening
1.  Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher led) with diverse partners on grade 4 topics and texts, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.
e. Seek to understand and communicate with individuals from different perspectives and cultural backgrounds.

If you are ever in the building--stop up to the second floor to see all of their hard work!
