st. clare center
The Broad Street building, formerly the Broad Street School which housed all the students at St. Francis School before the Adam Street school was built, has a new name and focus.
The Broad Street building is home to the Growing Our Faith programs, the Parish Outreach, St. Vincent dePaul Society and Young Life programs. In addition, the Maryknoll Missionaries have space in the building as well. There are also events in the hall which features a stage and kitchen.
Because the building has found so many new uses, the parish decided to rename it St. Clare Center. St. Clare was the first woman follower of St. Francis of Assisi. She followed the rules of his order of priests, establishing the religious order of the Poor Clares, contemplative nuns who live a life of prayer, community and joy.
Jane Mago, a trustee of the parish and volunteer at the rectory, said that one day in the rectory, the pastor was talking about the center and mentioned finding a statue of St. Clare to put in front of the building to alert the community to the renamed building. This inspired her to want to give a statue to the church. Rich Rog and his wife Diane, who have been active members at St. Francis for many years, was the next person Father Uebler approached. Rog, who retired as manger of a machine shop whose specialty was designing tools for a variety of customers, put his experience to work. He built a scale model and then a 3-D drawing of a statue which he presented to the building and grounds committee. Companies submitted quotes and Schmidt’s Contracting was selected to make the statue.
Fr. Uebler suggested that the more than 200 bricks that form the base for the statue could be a fundraiser for the tuition assistance fund for the school.
Each brick may be purchased for $100 by anyone who would like to help. The tuition assistance fund is part of the parish’s Endowment Fund, and each year the interest and dividends from the Endowment Fund are used to help children of needy families attend our school.
